Conforming Figures to Terrain Features / Each Other
When a figure is contacted anywhere on its front edge by an enemy figure which is part of a group, it must pivot as necessary to face the figure contacting it, unless it is part of a group consisting of other than Light troops (Crew, Irregular, and some others in Bayonet variants), or in even partial edge contact with a friendly figure other than Light troops, or defending a fortification or the edge of a terrain feature.
Otherwise a figure moving into contact must conform to the enemy figure it contacts.
A figure with double frontage conforms to 2 single frontage figures.
Interpenetration, etc.
No figure can normally enter through a gap (between, for example, other figures) of less than its frontage, nor shoot through with direct fire (LoS) weaponry.
About twice as many figures can fight in close order as their frontage would permit. In Good Going, GIs and Heavies can do this without penalty.
Figures can also fight in narrow Passages.
A figure cannot interpenetrate friends who are in contact with an enemy figure’s front edge, or if either are in Difficult Going or in restricted conditions such as a gateway.
Irregulars, GIs (and some others in Bayonet variants) can interpenetrate friends in Rough Going.
Other troop types cannot interpenetrate in Rough Going.
Large (double frontage) vehicles, etc. cannot interpenetrate one another or other vehicles.
Otherwise, all friendly troops can interpenetrate one another.
Where elements are not aligned exactly, they may have the benefit of the doubt upto an angle of 45°.
