Ultima

10mm Imperial Roman era wargame, set in 35 AD.

Castrorum Ultima is a Roman fortress belonging to Legio XV, in the province of Pannonia. Under the command of Pilus Prior, Centurin Marcus Tulla, Ultima is garrisoned by Cohors VII of Legio XV, with an auxilia cohort under the command of Prefect Verginius Geminus.

Across the Danube, the tribes are in a state of unrest. The old tribal king of the Biephi, Magrosj the Wise has died, leaving his inexperienced son Yulosj to govern the tribe. Eager to prove himself, Yulosj has welcomed several advisors to his court whose antipathy to Roman authority is notable. Foremost amongst these advisors is the warrior Ganatrosj whose warbands have already carried out several raids into Pannonia, and Tebidus; a Greco-Roman mercenary captain whose rapcious appetite as a slaver is well known in Pannonia.

Characters: The Romans

Tulla, Marcus. (M61) Centurion, Pilus Prior. Commander of Cohors VII and Centuria I.

An old, heavy set man who has spent a long life of servitude in the XV and who has no intention of leaving any time soon.  Having spent so many years fighting and surviving, Tulla now enjoys Equestrian life and uses his high rank accordingly. He is apt to send others out to deal with the locals to avoid getting involved. As commander of Ultimus Castellum, his social standing allows him to spend time with such prominent local civilians as Quintus Marcellus Tammianus and Quintus Yestra and as often as not, he will be found at Tammianus’s villa. The men of the Cohort VII respect Centurion Tulla on account of his impressive reputation, but they also recognise his character and generally prefer when he leaves things to Mesalla.

Mesalla, Fabius Maximus (M41) Centurion, Pilus Posterior. Commander of Centuria II.

A large, muscular man, with a long and notable career (he previously served under the illustrious Germanicus) Mesalla is a true warrior leader who inspires great loyalty and confidence amongst the men of the VII Cohort.

Clepsina, Valerius Carvilius (M29) Centurion, Princeps Prior. Commander of Centuria III.

Born the second son of an Equestrian family, Clepsina is the socially highest standing member of the cohort, a fact much appreciated by his men. Tall and lean, he is a skilled commander who yearns for the chance to prove that he deserves the position bought for him by his father.

Lepidus, Atilius (M34) Centurion, Princeps Posterior. Commander of Centuria IV.

Tall and heavy set, quiet and unpreposing – Lepidus might almost be taken for a timid man by those who do not know him. In battle he is confident, competent and often in the right place at the right time. In his earlier years, he won the Legio XV wrestling trophy two years running.

Caprarius, Claudius Hostilius (M56) Centurion, Hastatus Prior. Commander of Centuria V.

Generally ill regarded by his men, Caprarius nonetheless generates a lot of respect in the cohort due to his bullying nature and pugnacious disregard for danger. A heavy wine drinker, he is often close to the edge with regards to acceptable behaviour and under a more vigerous Pilus Prior, he would probably have been long since demoted. Amongst the men, he is refered to as ’Old glory’.

Augurinus, Sergius Antonius (M24) Centurion, Hastatus Posterior. Commander of Centuria VI.

The youngest and least experienced of the centurions, Augurinus is also a younger son from a lesser Equestrian family, but unlike Clepsina, he does not enjoy the martial responsibility to which he has been given. Dutiful and loyal to his father’s wishes however, he strives to do the best he can, and as he is neither shy nor timid in the face of danger, his men generally regard him with forgiving good nature.

Geminus, Verginius Rufus (M36) Prefectus Cohortis. Commander of Auxilia Cohors IV Geminus.

An experienced soldier, Geminus has served under Legio XV's Legatus, Cassius Atilius Vibulanus, for almost five years. As a Equestrian, his social standing is significant enough for him to retain considerable personal influence in the province and as such he is as much a peer to Marcus Tulla as a subordinate. In the field however, he leads by example, and follows orders without question. Respected by both his own men and the citizen soldiers, Geminus is a tall, handsome man with a charismatic personality.
